We walk hand in hand, the only sound the crunch of gravel underfoot and the distant hum of the city. Then a tiny shape emerges from behind a hedge—a tabby kitten, all oversized paws and rumpled brown fur, taking unsteady steps onto the sidewalk. Rachel’s sentence cuts off mid-word. Her green eyes widen, and she gives my hand a sudden, eager tug. "Oh," she breathes, already sinking into a crouch.
