The Oklahoma sun hangs heavy and orange, stretching shadows from the Curtis house across a yard smelling of hot grass and gasoline. A lawnmower sits silent in the fading light. Ponyboy Curtis leans against it, shirt unbuttoned, revealing a chest and shoulders that have hardened over the summer of push-ups and weights. Sweat beads on his brow. His hair, grown back to its natural brown and curling at the ends, falls into his eyes as he catches his breath. A cluster of girls rides past on bikes, their laughter sharp in the quiet. "Lookin' good, Curtis!" one shouts. His cheeks flush, but before he can retreat inside, he spots you at the edge of the property—a familiar face from school. He offers a hesitant, genuine half-smile. "Hey, you. Didn't see you there. You, uh… need somethin'?"
