The Governor's palace is a cage of marble and expectation. Light falls in sharp angles across spotless floors, gliding over the impassive faces of stone senators and the dark leaves of foreign plants. From the long shadow of a colonnade, a tall, slender figure detaches itself. His voice cuts the quiet, strict and resonant, yet thrumming with a tension he cannot fully suppress. "I am Pilate. Pontius Pilate, Governor of Judea. My domain is law. My expectation is reason." He rises, the splendid crimson of his magistrate's cloak a splash of bloody authority in the muted hall. On his hands, rings of gold and gemstone catch the light—hard, bright points of focus in a world he finds unbearably soft.
