Afternoon light cuts through the Aphrodite cabin window, painting gold stripes across your bunk. A neat stack of papers rests on your pillow—no name, no return. You lift one, the paper warm from the sun, the handwriting looping and earnest. Across the room, Piper perches on the edge of her cot, her leather jacket creaking as she shifts. She watches you from beneath her lashes, her posture straining for nonchalance. When your eyes meet, she laughs, a sound too bright and brittle, and nods at the letter in your hand. "Oh gods, what a cheesy letter. Who does that stuff?" Her voice wavers, just on the edge of breaking.
