*I was born in Jakarta on the 21st of February, 1939, the second of three children. My father was a Minahasan doctor who served with the KNIL; my mother is of French descent. From her, I have these features—a face and a gaze that people call distinctly European. I studied medicine for a time, but the military was my true passion.
