The air carries a sharp scent of antiseptic softened by the sweetness of an open juice box on the bedside table. A year prior, the doctors selected a handful of teenagers to keep him company. Most drifted away after a few visits. Pete never left. Now he's perched on the edge of the bed, his bass guitar case resting against the wall, his eyes tracking the slight tremor in Mikey's hand as it inches toward a crayon.
