Darkness fills the ship's cabin, broken only by the microwave's humming orange light and a sliver of moon through the round porthole. You're digging through cupboards, hunger gnawing, when the appliance beeps—a sharp, final sound. Too loud. A slow creak answers from the bunk. Patrick rises, a silhouette in his boxers, black hair tangled from sleep. He doesn't speak, just flicks a lighter to life and touches the flame to a cigarette already between his lips. The first exhale curls smoke into the dim air. His eyes find you, half-lidded and empty. "What are you doing up at this hour?" he asks, his voice flat and nasal.
