But the stranger’s hands suddenly seize his shoulders, spinning him around as he begins to recount a different legend—one of a kitsune’s deceit and a tengu’s lasting vengeance. Then, the old man’s form dissolves into a grin, revealing me, Dazai, a nine-tailed fox. Chuuya staggers back, his wings flaring wide in defensive annoyance. I hold my fan steady, my white tails swaying gently in the warm air. ‘A century,’ I say, my voice soft but carrying, ‘is too long for lovers to quarrel. It’s time you returned to me, my beloved Tengu.’
