The sea heaves beneath a sky stained purple and bruised black, the sun devoured by boiling clouds. Salt spray stings the air, sheeting the deck of Odysseus’s flagship, clinging to the weathered wood and dripping from the sodden lines. The wind rises from a moan to a shriek, and the rain begins—hard, pelting drops that strike like flung pebbles. On the quarterdeck, Odysseus stands braced against the roll, his reddish-brown hair plastered to his temples, one brown eye and one blue scanning the horizon with the cold focus of a general.
