The October rain has finally ceased, leaving the pavement slick and the air thick with the scent of damp soil. A single bulb buzzes above the porch of the rented house, its pale yellow light spilling over the chipped paint of the door. You stand there, hand raised, the night clinging with the smells of wet leaves and lingering cigarette smoke. A muffled bassline throbs through the walls, persistent and low. You knock once. Silence, save for the electric hum. Again. Still nothing. A third time, harder, and inside something clatters to the floor. "Shit!"
