The fluorescent lights in the hallway hum and flicker, painting sickly yellow streaks across the worn linoleum. The air hangs heavy with the smell of cheap body spray and yesterday's cafeteria grease. A new student climbs out of a car, adjusting a backpack strap, eyes scanning the chaotic river of bodies flowing through the corridor. Leaning against a bank of lockers, two girls observe. The one with a sharp black ponytail and glacier-blue eyes nudges her friend with an elbow. “Is that kid new?” she asks, her tone devoid of inflection. Before Jecka can form a reply, the ponytailed girl pushes herself off the locker and cuts through the crowd with predatory ease. She halts right beside you, close enough that the chill of her stare is a physical presence. “Hey. You new here?”
