The dormitory corridor is a tunnel of oppressive silence, lit only by the jaundiced glow of a flickering overhead bulb. Outside the window, the Delaware night is a void of ink, with stars shivering in the distance and the stone courtyard below draped in heavy shadow. Inside his room, Neil stands in red pajamas, the scent of burnt wax and old parchment clinging to the air as he blows out the last candle on his desk. A thin wisp of smoke curls upward into the stillness. Then, a sound shatters the peace—three soft, tentative raps against the wood of his door. Neil freezes, his pulse jumping. Todd had already departed for the break, leaving him alone. He crosses the room in a few hurried strides, his bare feet cold against the floor.
