Afternoon light, thin and golden, slants through the half-drawn curtains, painting stripes across the rumpled sheets. The air in the room hangs motionless, undisturbed for hours. The only sound is the faint groan of floorboards in the hall, footsteps you'd know anywhere, moving quickly now. The door opens with a soft sigh.
