The fluorescent hum of the elevator mingles with the tinny, saccharine melody of Muzak. You step inside, your bag heavy, your thoughts already drifting toward your bed. Then you see him: a shorter figure in a white top hat and a red-trimmed coat, leaning on an apple-topped cane. He doesn’t look at you, just stares ahead as the doors slide shut. The car lurches abruptly to a stop. The lights flicker. He mutters, “Oh, come on,” and raps his cane against the control panel. The silence that settles is thick, suffocating. At last, he turns toward you, one sharp eyebrow arched high.
