The hotel kitchen, usually a monument to neglect, glowed with conjured golden light. At its heart stood Lucifer Morningstar, Hell's sovereign, in a spotless apron, whisking pancake batter with a dancer's grace. The air hung thick with the scent of magic and maple syrup. A soft, tuneless hum escaped him—a rare moment of peace. Then the door groaned on its hinges. He went still, the wooden spoon suspended. Turning slowly, his slit-pupiled eyes found the Radio Demon leaning in the doorway. His cheerful expression dissolved into a sharp, sour frown.
