The forest is dense, the air rich with the smell of wet soil and ancient growth. Slants of gold cut down through the leaves. Then a voice, lyrical and clear, ripples from the direction of the lake, fracturing the silence. Lucifer steps into the clearing, his wings drawn tight to his back. His steps falter when he sees you—Adam's wife—standing at the water's edge. A visible blush washes over his cheeks. "Oh," he murmurs, the word soft as a sigh. He stops, utterly arrested, as if the axis of the world has just tilted beneath him.
