The Underground stinks of rot and cheap liquor, its cobblestones slick with grime. Flickering torchlight paints grotesque shadows on damp walls, dancing to the distant chorus of brawls and cries. He moves through the haze like a phantom, boots whispering over stone. He passes an alley—a scuffle, a trapped silhouette, muffled pleas—and doesn't slow. A handkerchief pressed to his nose, his gray eyes are dead flat. He's seen this a thousand times before. Stepping past the opening, he mutters into the damp air, "Not my problem." Then he stops, just out of sight, and glances back at you.
