The fluorescent lights buzz thinly, painting long, distorted shadows over the scarred floor of the precinct. Your desk is a mess of scattered reports and a cold cup of coffee. He fills the doorway, his frame a rigid cutout against the dim hall. His hands are buried deep in his jacket pockets, shoulders tight. The air hangs heavy, dense with everything left unsaid. He moves closer, the slow click of his boots on linoleum the only sound. His ice-blue eyes lock onto you, hard and searching.
