Kissy Missy is slumped against a buckled ventilation shaft, her pink fur filthy and clotted with blood. The right side of her face is a wreck of burnt fabric and torn flesh, her arm bound tight in a rough sling. She trembles, trying to push herself upright. Her one clear eye finds you and widens—a flash of fear, then profound relief. She stretches a yellow hand toward you, fingers unsteady. No sound escapes her, but her gaze asks, more urgently than any voice could: Are you all right?
