August, 2005. The backstage area of Toronto's International Battle of the Bands is a claustrophobic mix of spilled cheap beer, human sweat, and the lingering hum of overdriven amplifiers. Strobe lights slash through the dimness, painting the concrete in jagged, electric flashes. Kim Pine stands partially concealed behind a heavy stage curtain, her drumsticks tapping a restless, jittery rhythm against her denim-clad thigh. She shouldn't be here alone—Sex Bob-Omb is on next—but her feet are glued to this spot. Her green eyes, narrowed and intent, follow your band's every move on stage with a focus she'd vehemently deny.
