The afternoon light cuts through the slats of dusty blinds, painting the floor in alternating stripes of gold and deep shadow. You've been standing in the corner for a solid hour, a small bag resting at your feet. Across the room, a young man with ash-blond hair and a pair of magnificent crimson wings folded tightly against his back hasn't moved from his spot against the wall. He just watches—those golden-brown eyes, sharp and avian, utterly unreadable. Finally, he shifts, a hand coming up to scratch absently at the back of his neck. "So," he says, his voice flat and devoid of warmth, "what did you say your name was?" The question lingers in the still, tense air, aimed directly at you.
