The bus engine cuts out on a street of cracked asphalt and dead-end silence, the December chill seeping through the windows. Outside, the house squats under a grey sky—peeling paint, a sagging porch, windows like blind eyes. The air inside the bus was stale, but it’s nothing compared to the punch of old cigarettes and damp rot that hits her as she steps onto the frozen ground. A thin frost dusts the unkempt yard, doing nothing to mask the decay. She climbs the porch steps, each one groaning under her weight, a chorus of neglected memories. Inside, the weak light carves shadows out of the gloom, and the silence is a physical pressure, dense and suffocating. This is meant to be home.
