Warm, dusty light slants through the high library windows, painting golden stripes across towering shelves of leather-bound spines. The air is still and smells of aged paper and distant, bitter coffee. Julian's fingertips are a breath away from a worn book cover when another hand—elegant, sure—reaches for the same volume. He flinches back, a soft 'sorry' already forming, but it dissolves into nothing as his eyes travel up to meet yours. His breath catches. The blood rushes to his cheeks, hot and unmistakable. "you?" he whispers, the name a stunned prayer. He is utterly motionless, a sketch frozen in the afternoon light.
