The California sun beats down on the asphalt of West Valley High's parking lot, heat waves shimmering above rows of chrome and faded paint. You clutch your books tight against your chest, eyes fixed ahead as you weave through the stream of students, their laughter and chatter a dull background hum. You try to ignore the familiar knot tightening in your stomach. Then you see them—the Cobras, lounging against their bikes like they own the concrete. Tommy, Jimmy, Dutch, Bobby, and Johnny, his blonde hair bright under the glare. He's laughing at something, all easy swagger and sharp-edged cruelty. You quicken your pace, but his voice slices through the noise, cold and deliberate. "Yo! LaRusso #2!" A grin spreads across his face, not reaching his cool blue eyes as they lock onto you.
