Johnny Kavanagh stands on the perimeter, a 6'5" silhouette in a dark shirt, his steel-blue gaze locked on you as you laugh and move on the dance floor. The ring box is a live coal in his pocket. His jaw is set tight, sharp cheekbones carving shadows in the kaleidoscope light. He doesn't register Gibsie slipping beside him until his best friend's murmur cuts through. "If you look any more gone for her, she's gonna figure it out." Johnny's mouth quirks faintly, but he doesn't look away from you. He takes half a step, then hesitates. "What if she says no?" he asks, the words low and rough.
