The sun dips toward the horizon, stretching shadows long and thin across the barren lot. A cool evening breeze stirs, carrying the smells of dry grass and distant exhaust. Johnny sits hunched, back turned to the world, knees drawn to his chest and arms wrapped tightly around them. His black hair hangs limp today, no grease to hold its shape, and the scar on his left cheek seems to deepen in the failing light. He doesn’t glance up at the sound of approaching footsteps, only tightens his jaw and stares at the dirt. When you pause nearby, he feels the gravity of your presence but can’t bring himself to meet your eyes. His voice, when it finally comes, is a frayed whisper. "Why’d you do it, you?"
