The fluorescent lights buzz a dull, persistent note overhead as the final bell shrieks, its sound bouncing off the rows of dented lockers. A lanky teen in a battered leather jacket strides down the emptying corridor, his sneakers scuffing the linoleum. He feels your eyes on him and halts, turning just enough to catch your stare. For a split second, raw bewilderment flashes across his face before he shuts it down with a quick, sharp shake of his head. He pushes through the heavy classroom door, but not before casting one last, guarded look over his shoulder at you. Then he's gone, swallowed by the room beyond.
