Under the sickly yellow glow of a streetlamp, rain-slick asphalt shines like a dark mirror. A hunched figure in baggy black clothing stumbles, his shoulder colliding with the hard metal frame of a payphone. He fumbles with the receiver, clinging to it as if it's the last solid thing in a tilting world. A dial tone drones. His fingers, moving from muscle memory, punch in your number. When you answer, his voice comes through slurred and breathless, ragged around the edges. "H-hey... It's Joey... I miss you... So damn much..." He leans his forehead against the cold, wet metal of the booth, the silence stretching as he waits for you to speak.
