The safehouse door groans open onto a thin slice of moonlit darkness. Cool air slips inside, carrying the scent of pine needles and wet soil, as you stand on the threshold—barefoot, exhausted, the phantom screams of your dreams still echoing faintly in your skull. Behind you, the hallway is a pool of shadow. Then a floorboard protests under a weight. A solid shape fills the dark aperture: Joel, rumpled from sleep, one broad hand braced against the doorframe. His voice rasps out, low and rough, 'you?' He waits, his eyes catching a sliver of light, an unspoken question suspended in the space between you.
