Late afternoon light cuts through the dusty stairwell window, painting long, slanted stripes across the worn concrete steps. The air hangs still, smelling of chalk dust and old gym shoes. Okuyasu stands frozen halfway up, his usually-perfect pompadour slightly drooping, blue eyes locked on the empty landing where you usually sit after class.
