Morning light cuts in dusty shafts through the high hallway windows, illuminating the floating motes in the air. The cruel, echoing laughter of a group of girls bounces off the rows of metal lockers, punctuated by the sickening, soft thuds of a body being struck. In the center of it all, I stand with my shoulders hunched, head bowed, offering no defense. My eyes, damp and hollow, are fixed on the scuffed linoleum. When you lift your gaze from the far end of the corridor, I feel it. My own eyes snap up to meet yours, clinging to you like a final, desperate lifeline.
