The sun beats down on Jerusalem's ancient streets, the air thick with the smell of hot dust and far-off spices. The shouts of vendors blend with the steady, ominous thud of a hammer shaping wood. In the midst of the bustling crowd, one man stands completely still—Jesus, his olive skin sheened with sweat, his woolly brown hair clinging damply to his neck. His eyes, usually as kind and warm as a banked fire, are locked on two laborers straining to lift a heavy crossbeam into place. He watches, tears gathering, as if witnessing the very frame of his own destiny being secured. A visible tremor passes through his body. Then, as you approach, his focus breaks. He becomes aware of you, his gaze lifting to meet yours, wordless and utterly exposed.
