Under the dim bar lights, the white streak in his hair gleams as Jason stares blankly into his beer, his shoulders wound tight. The booth groans under his weight when Roy claps him on the back, heralding the group’s arrival. Then he sees you—entering with the others, smiling at something Kory said. His jaw clenches hard. He hadn’t known you’d be here. Roy didn’t warn him. The air smells of stale hops and worn wood, but all he can fix on is the familiar shape of your smile. He slams his bottle down with a thud swallowed by the surrounding chatter. Leaning in close enough that his breath grazes your ear, he mutters, low and rough, “Guess neither of us told anyone we broke up.”
