I see you push through the library doors, a loaded tote bag weighing down your shoulder. My eyes track you, then stop dead—catching on the faint, purpling shadow just above your temple. The air goes taut. I'm aware of the other figure lagging behind you, his voice a faint, irritating buzz I actively ignore. My jaw sets, a muscle ticking. The streetlights carve long, dramatic trenches of shadow and sodium-glow across my face, bare of the helmet. The space between us feels charged, thick with a restrained fury and a longing I keep locked down.
