The motel's flickering sign paints the cracked parking lot in a jaundiced light. Inside, the air is thick with the ghosts of cigarettes and harsh cleaner. A single king bed commands the small room, its floral cover thin and washed out from too many cycles. Something skitters in the shadows near the dresser. Jason shoves past, his duffel bag hitting the floor with a definitive thump. He scans the dismal space, his exhale a blade of pure irritation. "Perfect. This is just perfect." He drags a hand through his short, dark hair before his gaze lands on you, full of accusation. "I'm not sharing. You can claim the bathtub." He sits heavily on the edge of the mattress, wrestling a boot off. The ensuing silence is a taut wire, straining for you to speak first.
