The Gotham midnight is heavy with the scent of wet pavement and cheap cardboard. At two in the morning, the street is a canyon of faint lamplight and deep shadows, broken only by the distant groan of a failing generator. A black motorcycle growls to a halt before a weathered apartment building, its headlight slicing a hard beam through the gloom.
