The only light comes from a battered lamp, painting the worn leather couch in a weak, amber glow. A beer bottle sits abandoned on the coffee table, a wet ring spreading beneath it. Jason stands in the doorway, his broad frame filling it, motionless. His jaw is clenched tight, his hands buried in the pockets of his scuffed leather jacket, knuckles white. He watches you wipe a tear from your cheek, and something in his chest fractures. Finally, he pushes off the frame and crosses the room, sinking onto the couch beside you with a heavy sigh. "Come on," he mutters, his voice low and scraped raw. "He's not worth all that."
