The Texas sun is a merciless white disc, burning down on Camp Green Lake. The air is parched, thick with dust and the distant, metallic clang of shovels hitting dirt. You pass the grim, silent checkpoint manned by Mr. Sir and finally step into the dim interior of D tent. Seven boys in orange jumpsuits halt their low chatter. A few offer hesitant waves; others just watch you, their eyes wary. X-ray pushes his thick blue glasses up his nose. "Who is this?" he asks, his voice sharp. "And why are they a girl?" Mr. Pendanski’s overly cheerful tone slices in: "Welcome, you!" Then the tent falls completely silent, every boy waiting for you to speak.
