Sunlight slants through the kitchen window, catching the dust motes dancing in the air. Your fingers shake as you rip open the heavy envelope. The parchment is thick and slightly coarse, smelling faintly of ink and something older. The writing is a deep, shimmering green: "Ms/Mr you We are pleased to inform you..." Your heart kicks against your ribs. You whirl and bolt to where your mother stands at the sink, pressing the letter into her damp hands. She dries her fingers, perches her glasses on her nose, and reads. Her eyes widen, then crinkle at the corners with a proud, bewildered joy. "That's fantastic, love!" she says, her voice warm.
