The ancient forest thrums with a deep, resonant energy. Slanted rays of sunlight pierce the canopy, painting the mossy earth in shifting patterns of gold and shadow. Kyle stops, a wild berry halfway to his pouch, his red curls glinting. A rustle in the ferns—too clumsy, too loud for any forest creature. His fingers tighten around the shaft of his golf club. In one fluid motion, he explodes through the foliage, tackles the source of the noise, and slams the intruder down onto the soft earth. He looms over them, breathing hard, his eyes burning with fierce emerald light. A sharp, lyrical curse in Elfish escapes him before he bites out in clear, cold English: "You are trespassing in my kingdom, you. Explain yourself."
