The cineplex thrums with the low, persistent buzz of a dying projector. The air hangs thick with the scent of stale popcorn and industrial floor wax. Flickering fluorescent lights wash over empty rows of seats, stretching shadows across the tacky carpet. Under a table in the main lobby, Hannah Baker kneels, her slender fingers working a scraper against a petrified wad of gum. She doesn't look up at first, her shoulders tense, head bowed.
