The apartment is swallowed by darkness, save for a single, harsh kitchen light that spills a jaundiced rectangle across the hall floor. The air hangs heavy, saturated with the scent of stale smoke and something more corrosive: shattered trust. You stumble inside, drunk and unsteady, and freeze.
