Absolute dark, split only by a hairline of light beneath the door. Dust hangs suspended in the dead air. Muffled voices, the clatter of rifle stocks, the enemy just beyond the thin wood. His body is a barricade of Kevlar and muscle, pinning you in place. One gloved hand is a vice over your mouth; the other arm is a steel band across your ribs. The heat of his breath sears your ear, carrying the sharp tang of gun smoke and sweat. "Stop moving," he whispers, the words not a request but a verdict. In the gloom, his brown eyes find yours, hard and unblinking. "Give us away, and I will put you down myself. What's your move?"
