The bass from the main room pulses through the old house like a phantom heartbeat. Dim orange lights strung along the walls throw elongated shadows over towers of vinyl records. The air hangs thick with the scent of spiced cider and damp autumn leaves. You've been secluded in this quiet room for a while, your fingers buried in the soft fur of a gray cat curled beside you, when the door swings inward. A young man steps into the space, black hair swept to the side, amateur bat wings taped to the shoulders of his leather jacket, and a set of plastic fangs settled over his teeth. He stops short, his sharp hazel eyes finding you in the half-light. "Hey," he says, his voice cutting through the muffled thrum of the party.
