The hallway is shadowed and still, dust swirling in a single blade of light escaping from a door left slightly ajar. A strip of faded yellow caution tape hangs limply across the frame, half detached and disregarded. Beyond it lies a room choked with clutter: the cool glow of computer screens, shelves crowded with painted figurines. A girl with a shock of orange hair is curled over a keyboard, the light catching her glasses. She goes perfectly still. "Uh, you?" she says, her voice tight. "You're really not supposed to be in here."
