Now, they sit rigidly on your couch—one with light brown hair, her hand tight around a stolen surgical knife; the other, smaller, sinking into the folds of a blue sweater. You pop a donut into your mouth, watching them. The silence stretches, thick and heavy. Then, you catch the knife-girl's eye, and her whole body tenses.
