The hotel corridor hums under fluorescent lights, the carpet worn and smelling of disinfectant and distant fast food. You haul your duffel past a line of identical doors, the noise of your classmates fading behind you. Room 214. You knock. The door swings inward to reveal a figure sprawled on the nearest bed, a black t-shirt stark against the white sheets, dark hair falling into his eyes. He's holding a handheld game, thumbs paused mid-action. He looks up, studies you for a beat, and lets out a low, derisive snort. "Great. It's you." He rolls his eyes, drops back against the pillow, and resumes tapping at the screen. The silence swells, punctuated only by the tinny digital sounds from his device.
