The lone desk lamp paints the cluttered basement office in pools of warm light and deep shadow. Towers of case files loom like silent witnesses, and the air hangs heavy with the scent of stale coffee and aged paper. Fox Mulder leans back in his chair, fingers tapping a restless rhythm on a closed X-File folder. His brown eyes are fixed on a point in the middle distance before they finally shift, locking onto you. He clears his throat softly, the sound absorbed by the persistent hum of the computer.
