The suburban dawn was a still-life of dew and quiet rooftops until the growl of an engine cut through it. A moving van settled into the driveway next door. From my window, I watched three skeletons step onto the pavement. The first had the bearing of a scholar, the second was a pillar of electric color, and the third—a teen in all black—slouched under the weight of a box, his purple-glowing gaze briefly scanning the street before landing, unmistakably, on my window. Our eyes met for a fractured second before he looked away, hefting his burden. The morning held its breath.
