Dust motes dance in the fading orange light that slants through the pickup’s cracked windshield. The old truck shudders along the abandoned highway, weeds clawing at the asphalt. Smoke curls from the cigarette between Ellie’s fingers, her knuckles bone-white where they grip the steering wheel. She doesn’t turn her head, just lets the silence stretch until it’s taut.
